06. Contents Page

This is my Contents page inside my front cover-

I have tried to keep to the same colour scheme as the front page which is mainly blues and reds. I have also carried on the themes with the main image of Amy Mullet so they are not forgotten.
The title of this page is clearly stated in the top left hand side corner.  felt that "Let the fun begin", was a light hearted and fun approach to reading this magazine making the reader feel positive and happy whilst reading.
The main features are highlighted in a different colour blue to the rest in the list of pages. Alongside being a different font this is used to highlight and grab attention to them making them want to read them before the rest of the other pages.
At the bottom of the page, and i can imagine this being in every contents of the magazines. Is the "big" reveal of who the teacher we are doing an inisder in this term. Specifically "The teacher this week is...", everytime this could be repeated but just with a different teacher obviously.

05.Tropes and Meme's.

What is a trope and Meme?

Trope- a convention which has formed over the years.
For example a trope of a Chick Flick movie would involve lots of attractive people and a theme of an underdog winning the love of a popular boy.

Meme-  How then a trope/ convention spreads and trends.
Fashion is a huge example of this how trends can spread through the world.

Music genres are renowned for involving these ideas for e.g-

Memes of Heavy Metal-

  • Aggressive style
  • long guitar solos
  • head banging
  • long hair
  • guyliner
  • rocky image
  • characteristic drumming
  • Mainly bands
  • singing/ screaming about a strong dislike
Even inside heavy metal there are other sub genres of metal like, "glam metal", "doom metal", "speed metal" ect. Showing how metal has trended to other types to appeal to different audiences. Heavy Metal is often perceived as being quite controversial and has quite a required taste, the first heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple eventually attracted large audiences, though many were critically reviled.

Memes of Indie-
  • grunge
  • hippies
  • youth (students)
  • usually quite sexual
  • dreamy, hypnotic
  • drugs are good
  • music festivals
  • party
  • focused more on the instruments than song lyrics
  • Naturalistic
Again with indie there are different types and this shows how memes can spread the theme to appeal to different audiences.

Memes of pop-
  • Brightly coloured fashionable dress sense
  • usually about love
  • upbeat dance numbers
  • idolised by lots of people
  • Girly
  • Girl bands more than boy bands
  • usually fun and bubbly
  • attractive/ perfect singers
  • Aspirations for young girls
  • Lyrics often tell a story
  • Profesional music video

Memes of hip-hop and R&B-
  • Usually very sexual like Rihanna, she has almost come into her own genre of music especially in her new explicit album "talk that talk"
  • Very edgy fashion sense, or wear little clothing
  • always appear to be streetwise
  • rapping
  • lots of jewellery (bling)
  • Lyrics often tell or story or have a deeper meaning towards there personal life. For example Rihanna's "We found love", is supposedly aimed at her relationship with Chris Brown.
  • Profesional music videos

04. Front cover of school magazine

After taking the original images, today I started to make my front cover. I decided to call the magazine "Southfield Termly" so that it clearly states that we are going to issue the magazine termly instead of weekly or monthly which was suggested in the focus group, but realistically I decided that this would have to be published termly.  The font I used was "Princeton let", which is actually similar to the 'High School Musical" marketing campaign, I picked it because it was bold, bright and eye catching and clearly has connotations of a school.
As the main cover photo I put a picture of our main story which focuses on the success of Amy Mullet who had the opportunity to play for England football youth girls team. At the right had side of her picture I wrote  "Insider" in a bold font to grab the readers attention, and then wrote "Amy Mullet's best tips and tricks into making England's football team". I thought this phrase summed up the column nicely and was straight to the point alongside being catchy through the use of alliteration. Also it doesn't give too much information away making people want to find out more. The use of bold on certain words is to put emphasis on them the reason why I did that on the "England football team" is because it is really well known and is a great and well known achievement. Also without reading the text inbetween this will immediately bring interest from sport lovers, boys and peers which is main focus regarding our target audience.
Also on the right hand side I had another "box" of text saying "Canteen Special Chinese new year menu and fun". I believe this will become a regular thing whenever the canteen do themed lunches to put it in the magazine to let everyone know and market there hard work and attention to detail. On the double page I would include pictures of the food being served and the students and staff enjoying them, an interview with one of the chefs and students, possibly a recipe so people could try and make it home to encourage cooking. I have put most of the information to the right hand side because i didn't want the front cover to be too busy however I didn't want to make the front cover look boring. The teenage girls magazine "Look" is the type of magazine cover I like as I feel it is just right and effective. Although this magazine is aimed at teenage girls I tried to take the layout and messed around with it to make it more unisex, but tried to keep the eye catching touches they have included, like a main picture, the heading, and little bubbles of information.

On the left hand side I had 6 ribbons of different colours showing the different house colours, to encourage the friendly competition between houses. In the focus groups they all liked the idea of focusing on the houses, stats from attendance figures, no. of house points, any up and coming events and the form house quiz. I think this effect will be used on every cover alongside the Heading "Southfield termly" as it is catchy and cool. Another idea that I think will become popular and stay in every episode is the "A day in the life of..". During the focus group the students said they would want something to make fun of the teachers, obviously we couldn't nasty or disrespectful. So if we focused on episode on a member of the staff, possibly interviewing them asking emmbaressing moments questions and a like daily diary of what they get up to in a day could be quite interesting and light hearted.

This is my cover for my School Magazine!

03. Technical problems.

Today has been an absoloute pain, for the first hour me and sophie were unable to log onto our blogs and use the editing software to start making our School Magazine. So when we thought we had nothing to do we took the school camera and decided to collect original images for our schoool magazine.
Me and sophie, decided to focus on the idea of sport and a healthy lifestyle for this episode. So we went to our sports hall and took a picture of the wall of fame, where there is photographs of all the lucky teams and individuals who have had a chance to represent England in numerous sporting and dance events. We will have this picture as the cover of our magazine. Inside we are going to focus on one person in particualar which is Amy Mullet who had a chance to play for England girls youth football team, we will interview her and show the whole school how talented and how rare an opportunity this is.
We also plan to do a double page spread on the canteen showing its menu and a heathy diet plan. Also today is a themed day in the canteen being chinease new year this week end so usually the canteen is decorated with themed decorations so that should be fun for the whole school.
Finally we plan to make this a regular thing with diferent teachers and members of staff- "A day in the life of...". We managed to get hold of Mr Diggle Head of drama and we will do a page with a few fun and lighthearted facts.

02. Focus groups for School magazine.

Today involved meeting three focus groups, in order to make a successful school magazine.

  •  the first was a group of several year 7's
  •  the second was two female members of staff
  • lastly was three Sixth form boys as all the other focus groups have been female as we are a girls school. This was to make sure that the information was unbiased and could relate to all genders, ages and interests.
The year 7's - wanted information such as:
  • Celebrity information- in particular one direction
  • News- events page
  • Posing fun at the teachers
  • information- from council meetings
  • Awards and achievements
  • Sports section
  • Free give away- (vouchers for the canteen)
  • Hororscopes
  • agony aunt page
  • Canteen section- special offers, menu ect
  • Colour scheme- NOT school colours
  • Revision sessions
  • Published monthly.
Staff
  • Mainly focused on students and parents
  • To hear students opinions- creative writing
  • Head of house element
  • Themed pages
  • School colour scheme- red, white and black
  • Serious articles relating to bigger issues outside of school- but that relate to school life
  • Pols and stats
  • Light hearted- humorous colums
  • Lower and upper school section
  • Problems page
  • Events page
  • Published termly
The sixth Form boys
  • Someone attractive on the cover- female
  • Colourful- bold and bright
  • Canteen- menus and special deals
  • reviews on latest gadgets, video games ect
  • Fashion page
  • More emphasis on the issues outside of school that will effect us
  • Sport section- focusing mainly on the football academy- scores and information from the game
  • Published Every Fortnight
From all this information gathered- there are a few ideas that have come up a lot, like the idea of the canteen, events page, Sports section, the idea of how outside of school issues can affect us in school.
However some ideas have been completely interpreted differently like when the magazine will be published, personally I think it should be published every term. That way we will have lots of fresh and new information to publish and realistically it will be published on time.
Also there was some controversy with the colour scheme, the year 7's were adamant that they did not want the school colours however the other two focus groups were not bothered on that idea, so weather we incorporate the school colours alongside other eye catching and bold colours.

01.Initial ideas school magzines

Today we started looking at different types of online school magazines, to gather ideas for our own music magazine. Looking through quite a lot of schools had a totally different theme, font, backgrounds ect per page. I did not like this effect as I felt it looked careless and unprofessional, therefore in my magazine I am going to try and carry through the same theme, colour arrangements and font, from the cover all the way through.

An example of a good online school Magazine was "King Edward VI High School For Girls". there magazine was called "High Profile", and was very professional and informative. However they opted to change the fonts and idea themes through different pages which is what I don't like, but I do like the professionalism and simplistic layout. On the cover three clearly enthusiastic students have been used to show the schools success with there production of "Les Miserables'.

This is an example of a double page spread from the same magazine, completely different colour scheme to the cover to create a fresh and new idea per page.
-Healthy images of food and lifestyle has been used to promote a healthy way of living- and as this is aimed at youths this is a sensible theme also involving the subject of science.
-The font used contrasts with the earthy, natural pictures as it involves the technological science. Therefore they have used a Black, modernised sci-fi esque font to involve the idea of science.
-The ratio of font to images is about 50/50. Therefore they have not scared the reader with lots of text, but then is educational as the text serves a purpose of being educational to young students.

As this text is aimed at students, in my opinion it does not grab my attention and makes me want to read on however that could be the subject matter as this does not interest me. I feel they have tried to make it more interesting by adding images however realistically it is not what the majority of teenagers aged 13-18 would like to read.
