Trope- a convention which has formed over the years.
For example a trope of a Chick Flick movie would involve lots of attractive people and a theme of an underdog winning the love of a popular boy.
Meme- How then a trope/ convention spreads and trends.
Fashion is a huge example of this how trends can spread through the world.
Music genres are renowned for involving these ideas for e.g-
Memes of Heavy Metal-
- Aggressive style
- long guitar solos
- head banging
- long hair
- guyliner
- rocky image
- characteristic drumming
- Mainly bands
- singing/ screaming about a strong dislike
Even inside heavy metal there are other sub genres of metal like, "glam metal", "doom metal", "speed metal" ect. Showing how metal has trended to other types to appeal to different audiences. Heavy Metal is often perceived as being quite controversial and has quite a required taste, the first heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple eventually attracted large audiences, though many were critically reviled.
Memes of Indie-
- grunge
- hippies
- youth (students)
- usually quite sexual
- dreamy, hypnotic
- drugs are good
- music festivals
- party
- focused more on the instruments than song lyrics
- Naturalistic
Again with indie there are different types and this shows how memes can spread the theme to appeal to different audiences.
- Brightly coloured fashionable dress sense
- usually about love
- upbeat dance numbers
- idolised by lots of people
- Girly
- Girl bands more than boy bands
- usually fun and bubbly
- attractive/ perfect singers
- Aspirations for young girls
- Lyrics often tell a story
- Profesional music video
Memes of hip-hop and R&B-
- Usually very sexual like Rihanna, she has almost come into her own genre of music especially in her new explicit album "talk that talk"
- Very edgy fashion sense, or wear little clothing
- always appear to be streetwise
- rapping
- lots of jewellery (bling)
- Lyrics often tell or story or have a deeper meaning towards there personal life. For example Rihanna's "We found love", is supposedly aimed at her relationship with Chris Brown.
- Profesional music videos
